Bienvenidos! Spanish is offered to all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. At the earliest levels, we focus on numbers, colors, days of the week, months, holidays with the goals being to learn basic vocabulary and to love the language.
Beginning in third grade, we focus our lessons toward proficiency with communicative, comprehension-based instructional strategies that bring together language and culture. We are implementing a Comprehensive Input Teaching system (TCI)which consists in a collection of approaches, techniques, and strategies for teaching language that prioritize the delivery of understandable and compelling messages in the target language (Spanish). Here are some examples of Comprehension - based strategies:
The Comprehensive Input approach allows the students to acquire Spanish not from practice (drills) but from consistent and constant exposure to input. Input is indispensable to language acquisition, therefore, Language cannot be acquired without it.
To support TCI we have acquired the SOMOS as well as Señor Wooly curriculums. The Somos curriculum teaches language and culture simultaneously, allowing Spanish students the opportunity to develop cultural understanding at a depth rarely achieved in beginning language courses while the Señor Wooly teaches Spanish through hilarious and a little crazy music videos.
